How to Measure Your Truck Bed for a Tonneau Cover

Measuring a pickup truck bed for a tonneau cover

Tonneau covers are built for a specific truck, cab and bed length. Pick the wrong bed length and the cover will not seal or latch. Here is how to get it right the first time.

What you need

  • A tape measure
  • Your truck's year, make, model and cab style (on the registration or door jamb sticker)

Step 1: Close the tailgate

Always measure with the tailgate up. Covers are sized to the space between the bulkhead and the inside of the closed tailgate.

Step 2: Measure along the bed rail

Run the tape along the top of the bed rail, from the inside of the front bulkhead to the inside of the tailgate. Do not measure along the bed floor, and do not include a bed liner lip or a tailgate cap.

Step 3: Match it to a standard size

Manufacturers round to the nearest common size, so a measurement of about 67 inches is usually listed as a 5'7" bed, about 78 inches as a 6'6" bed and about 97 inches as an 8' bed. Short, standard and long beds vary by brand and year, which is why measuring beats guessing.

Step 4: Check for anything that changes fit

  • Bed rail systems (like factory track rails or cargo management systems) can require a specific cover version.
  • Tool boxes need a tool box edition cover or a cover that sits behind the box.
  • Bed caps and rail caps may need to come off.
  • Multi-function tailgates (like GM MultiPro or Ram multifunction) can limit which covers fit.

Step 5: Shop by your truck

Use the vehicle selector at the top of our bed covers page. Enter your truck and you will only see covers built for it.
