There are dozens of tonneau covers, but most fall into three styles. Here is how they compare so you can narrow it down fast.
Hard folding covers
Hard panels that fold toward the cab. Examples include BAKFlip and other hard tri-fold designs.
- Best for: security and a clean look
- Bed access: fold back one or more panels, or remove the cover entirely
- Trade-off: folded panels block part of the rear window and use some bed space
Roll-up covers
A soft vinyl or reinforced cover that rolls toward the cab. Examples include ACCESS and TruXedo roll-up covers.
- Best for: full bed access at the lowest price
- Bed access: roll it all the way up in seconds
- Trade-off: less security than a hard or aluminum cover
Retractable covers
Aluminum or polycarbonate slats that slide into a canister at the front of the bed. Examples include Retrax and BAK Revolver-style designs.
- Best for: security plus full bed access, and locking at partial positions
- Bed access: retracts fully into the canister
- Trade-off: the canister uses some bed length, and these sit at the top of the price range
Quick comparison
| Hard folding | Roll-up | Retractable | |

Minnesota tip
Snow and ice are real here. Brush heavy snow off before opening any cover, and keep the seals clean so drain tubes can do their job.
