Grille Guards, Bull Bars and Bumpers: Protecting Your Truck in Deer Season

EX-GUARD 50-Series grille guards on Ford and GMC pickups

Deer crashes in Minnesota peak in October and November, when deer are on the move for the rut. Even a low-speed hit can crush a grille, headlights and radiator. Front-end protection will not make a truck deer-proof, but it can turn an expensive repair into a scuff.

Bull bars

A bull bar is a tube that covers the center of the grille and the lower bumper.

  • Best for: light protection, a clean look and a spot to mount lights
  • Trade-off: it does not cover the headlights
  • Shop: SteelCraft bull bars

Grille guards

A grille guard bolts to the frame and wraps across the whole front of the truck. Most designs cover the grille and both headlights.

Replacement front bumpers

A replacement bumper takes the place of the factory bumper. It is the strongest option, and many have a built-in guard or a winch mount.

What to check before you buy

  • Sensors and cameras. Newer trucks have parking sensors, front cameras and radar for adaptive cruise. Pick a guard made for your exact truck and trim so those keep working.
  • Fit. Guards and bumpers are vehicle-specific. Select your truck on the site and you will only see parts that fit.
  • Winch plans. If you want a WARN winch, choose a bumper or guard with a winch mount now.
  • Lights. Many guards have tabs for light bars and pods.

Deer season driving tips

  • Deer move most at dawn and dusk. Slow down on wooded roads at those times.
  • Where you see one deer, expect more behind it.
  • Use your high beams when there is no oncoming traffic.
  • If a deer jumps out, brake firmly and stay in your lane. Swerving often causes a worse crash.
